At the age of 15, Kino Makoto had what some could call an enviable life. Living on her own in an apartment in Minato-ku, Tokyo, she received a generous allowance from a distant cousin with which to meet her household expenses and occasional shopping trips, and went to school, as did most girls her age. But a quick temper, and an equally quick will to use it, landed her in hot water more than once, and she was finally expelled for fighting. She was then sent to Juuban Middle School, where her reputation as a bully had preceded her, and she was avoided like the plague. Used to being a loner, Makoto settled into life at a new school, already expecting that, within a few months, she’d be expelled and sent to another school. It had always happened before.

But when she came to Juuban, she met two girls, who, though she didn’t know it at the time, would become two of her closest friends and allies – the bright, bubbly Tsukino Usagi, and the quiet girl genius Mizuno Ami. That day, she also met Usagi’s black cat Luna – and wondered why there was something so familiar about the animal, who had a golden crescent moon on her forehead. But she dismissed it, and responded eagerly, if shyly, to the overtures of friendship made by the girls, neither of whom seemed to be very wary of her, given her reputation. Usagi in particular was eager to make friends with the tall girl, and Makoto responded to hers and Ami’s efforts warmly, opening up a little as time passed. She didn’t want to confide all her secrets, but nevertheless, a close friendship sprang up between them.

But there was darkness brewing on the horizon. The Dark Kingdom, dormant after so long, was stirring once more, and they were searching for the ginzuishou, a stone of immense power, which could work either in favour of good, or of evil. Beryl, the current ruler, wanted the power of the ginzuishou so her ally Metallia, a vast, malevolent force of unguessed power, could join with her and decimate the earth, turning it into a wasteland, and turning the surviving humans into their slaves.

Makoto's first encounter with the Dark Kingdom came in the form of an attack by the shitennou Nephrite, who used the rumour of a “ghost bride” to lure the men of Tokyo out into the magic storm he had conjured. Nephrite’s plan was simple; to turn the men into willing slaves of Beryl, and to then turn them against the rest of the citizens of Tokyo. Makoto, who had been walking towards home, saw the storm gathered over the Tokyo Tower, and, lured by something she didn’t understand, followed the path to the centre of the storm, where Nephrite floated, glee on his face as he exulted in the initial success of his plan. Makoto charged him, enraged, but was knocked back. She tried again, but before she could connect, a green pen appeared before her, with a golden circle on top, within which was enclosed the symbol of Jupiter. The moment her fingers closed around the item, words appeared in her head, and she uttered them: “Jupiter Power, Make-up!”

Transformed into Sailor Jupiter for the first time, she used the powers of the storm against Nephrite, her Flower Hurricane combining with the lightning to electrocute him. When he died, the men of Tokyo already under his spell awoke, and they stumbled off. Alone in the midst of the disappearing crowd, Makoto wondered what had happened to her – and where these strange powers had come from.

But the Dark Kingdom didn’t give her a chance to regroup. Stung only a little by their defeat, Jadeite, Nephrite’s successor, used a “haunted bus” to take passengers to a third dimension, where they would be turned into an army for Beryl and Metallia. It was an exact duplicate of Nephrite’s original plan, and it would’ve succeeded, if Makoto hadn’t sensed something amiss happening around the five crossroads near the Hikawa shrine – the home of Hino Rei, a fiery Shinto maiden with the gift of second sight. Makoto had met the girl once before, and thought her very graceful and beautiful, and it was her desire to see Rei again which led her to the shrine, just as Rei, kidnapped by a disguised Jadeite, was hauled aboard one of the “haunted buses”. Makoto grabbed the edge of the bus and was pulled into the third dimension, where other innocents had already been gathered.

Makoto managed to break the spell surrounding Rei, using one of her earrings, and was further assisted by two black crows, Phobos and Deimos, who appeared from out of nowhere and attacked Jadeite. Rei’s own transformation pen, the pen of Mars, came to her aid just in the nick of time, and she transformed into Sailor Mars. Makoto also transformed, and used her Supreme Thunder for the first time, combining it with Rei’s Fire Soul to kill Jadeite. The moment he died, the third dimension collapsed around them, returning them and the captives to earth.

Rei was stunned to discover that she, like Makoto, had supernatural powers, but she regrouped, and back at the Hikawa shrine, the girls discussed what to do next, and how best to combat any further threat from the Dark Kingdom – if indeed they could find out what these frightening foes wanted. Makoto remembered Usagi and Ami, and suggested that, since she was already close to them, there was a possibility they shared the same affinity.

Rei agreed, and the day after Jadeite’s attack, they went post haste to Juuban Middle School – only to find that it had been transformed into a nightmare mansion, under the control of Zoisite, yet another shitennou from the Dark Kingdom. His mission was different from his predecessors’ – lure out Princess Serenity, whom the Dark Kingdom was searching for, and take the ginzuishou, which was believed to be in her possession. Usagi and Ami had been caught in the middle of this deadly web, and they were in increasing danger, as Zoisite believed one of them was the Princess. He took especial interest in them, at first questioning, and then torturing them, but to no avail. Enraged at what he believed to be lies, he was about to kill them, but was stopped by a furious Supreme Thunder; Makoto had arrived, and with Rei by her side, they were a deadly combination.

Angered at the treatment of her friends, Makoto attacked Zoisite directly this time, and he countered with a blast of energy. The blast should’ve killed Makoto, but a wash of brilliant green light suddenly surrounded her, deflecting the blow and turning it back on Zoisite, killing him instantly.
